Physical Education

Teachers: Mrs D Barnett (Curriculum Lead for Performance), Mrs K Pitman, Mrs D Hay.

Physical Education is a popular subject that is an integral part of school life at Ribston Hall. Lessons are fun and dynamic and the broad curriculum offers a wide variety to students in all Key Stages. At Key Stage 3 the activities on offer include Netball, Hockey, Health Related Fitness, Swimming, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Football, Rugby, Gymnastics, Trampolining, Badminton, Basketball, Tennis, Rounders and Athletics. (these may vary per Year group).

The Ribston Hall PE department are committed to delivering high quality lessons using a variety of teaching methods. We aim to ensure that all students are challenged and inspired in lessons and we create an environment where students can be independent in their learning and develop numerous life skills that are transferable to other subjects and everyday challenges. Our Leadership programmes are highly regarded and many of their themes run through many lessons from an early age.

At Key Stage 4 there are different activities on offer, to try and encourage life- long participation. These include Yoga, Trampolining, Basketball, Flexi-bar, Badminton, Ultimate Frisbee and Aerobics. They are also given the opportunity to attend taster sessions such as Zumba and Self-Defence, as well as activities off site with visits to local sports arenas such as GL1and the warehouse.

In Year 9 our students all participate in Sports Education where they have the chance to lead their peers and develop skills in a team situation. Teams work in a variety of activities and are fully responsible for their learning and development over a series of lessons.

This is further enhanced by the Leadership programme in Key stage 4 where they can qualify in the level 1 National Certificate of sport. This programme has become very popular with the students and allows for every student to make a valid contribution to the outcomes achieved.

The Physical Education Department offer a wide variety of Extra-curricular Clubs at both lunchtime and after school. This includes a full fixture calendar, with the students competing at both District and County Competitions.

Intra school competition is a high priority for life at Ribston Hall, with many inter house competitions throughout the year.

Our student’s success is celebrated at the end of the year with a Sports Awards evening, where we welcome both the students and their parents to attend. Cups and colours will be presented to our students at this time.

Ribston Hall follows the AQA Examination Board. Students will sit a written paper, 60% of the total marks and they will choose 3 practical performances in sport, 30% of the total marks, which will include an analysis of performance. GCSE PE is not set against any other option choice, so students can select GCSE PE instead of taking part in core PE lessons.

A Level

We follow the AQA Examination Board, which is a natural progression from GCSE. Students will sit 2 x 2 hour written papers. They have to take part in 1 performance or coaching role, which is internally assessed and externally moderated.

For more information on either the GCSE or A level please visit the AQA website
