Entry Requirements & Subjects

The minimum entry requirements for Sixth Form admission to Ribston (for entry in September) are:

Five full course GCSE at Grade 6, with separate subjects at Grade 6 or higher (Core and Additional Science count as separate subjects). Short course GCSEs do not count towards the full course GCSE requirements.
Students should have a minimum of Grade 5 in both English Language and Mathematics.
Students should meet individual subject requirements as described in our Sixth Form Subject Guide in their chosen subjects if previously taken at GCSE level, or a relevant subject as specified in the Guide.

We recommend that students study three A-Level subjects. This can be combined with the Extended Project Qualification, which we strongly recommend for all students to support Higher Education applications (particularly for Oxbridge and Russell Group institutions). It is possible to study four A-Level subjects, although this is not required for university applications.

Admission Review Process

Internal and new students who have missed the entry criteria may request consideration for a place by the School’s Admissions Review Group, who may accept or reject applications.

The School’s Admissions Review Group will also consider the case for all applicants who have previously been in receipt of Pupil Premium but have not met the published admission criteria.

The Admissions Review Group meets to look at individual cases where there are extenuating circumstances which may have influenced performance. This group will also examine some cases where a student has not gained the grades to take a particular subject.

For the Admissions Review Group to consider a case, we need:

A completed Admissions Review Form, outlining the reason to be considered for extenuating circumstances
Evidence, if available, to explain the issue
GCSE results

The form, GCSE results and all evidence need to reach the Sixth Form Team. Further Admissions Review meetings will take place after this date should there be a requirement to do so. To request a copy of our Admissions Review Form, please email sixthform@ribstonhall.gloucs.sch.uk.

What to Expect

Following your application, you will be invited for an interview with one of the Sixth Form Team. The interview will comprise a discussion about your aspirations for Sixth Form and beyond, and your expected GCSE results and what you would like to gain, beyond academic excellence, from your Sixth Form experience. A conditional offer may then be made.

If you are awarded a place, which is confirmed following your GCSE results in August, it is expected you will complete the Summer Transition Work for your relevant subjects prior to starting in the Sixth Form in September.
