The department views mathematics as a subject which is fascinating in its own right and useful both to other subjects and many aspects of adult life. Our aim is for every pupil to fulfil their mathematical potential. To achieve this we strive to make our teaching consistent, clear, positive and inspiring. We try to highlight the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and to provide teaching that is committed to the pupils and their individual needs. Pupils are taught in sets from early on in Year 7. This allows for the more able pupil to be stretched and challenged and being in a smaller group allows those that need extra support to have more 1-1 time with their teacher.
The course is designed to consolidate pupil’s numerical and mathematical capability from Key Stage 2 and extend their understanding in this important subject. Pupils will be stretched and challenged to understand how mathematics forms part of everyday life through problem solving tasks and appropriate use of ICT. The content includes a broad variety of topics from each of the following strands: Number, Algebra, Ratio, Proportion and rates of change, Geometry and Measures, Probability and Statistics.
Edexcel GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics (1MA1) - first examinations in Summer 2017
All pupils are prepared for the Higher Tier of entry. Pupils develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including: Number, Algebra, Ratio, proportion & rates of change, Statistics and Probability.
Grade 4 will be equivalent to a present grade C and a grade 7 will be equivalent to a present grade A.

OCR Additional Mathematics (6993) or AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics (8360)
Cohort dependent we prepare students for one of the above examinations with the aim of introducing students to the power and elegance of advanced mathematics. This allows students to experience the directions in which the subject is developed post-GCSE and develop confidence in using mathematical skills in other areas of study. We feel that this course benefits able students who are thinking of undertaking A level Mathematics or other mathematically based subjects post 16.
Assessment: (Additional) One written paper, (Further) Two written papers at the end of Year 11.

AS Further Mathematics (3892): Further Pure 1, Decision 1 and Statistics 2
Assessment: Three equally weighted written papers at the end of Year 12.
A2 Mathematics (7890): Core 3, Core 4 and Mechanics 1
A2 Further Mathematics (7892): Further Pure 2, Further Pure 3 and an applied unit from Statistics 3, Mechanics 2 or Decision 2 (dependent on cohort)
Assessment: Three equally weighted written papers at the end of Year 13.
Other courses offered: Advanced Extension Award Edexcel (Mathematics 9801), Preparation for STEP and MAT examinations.
Timetable dependent, AS Further Mathematics may be offered for first teaching in Year 13.
To further enrich our student¹s enjoyment and understanding of mathematics, pupils from all years have the opportunity to take part in the UKMT Mathematics Challenges in school and the regional UKMT Team competitions held locally. Year 7 students are given the opportunity to visit the annual Mathemagic event held at Techniquest, Cardiff and Year 9 students are encouraged to participate in The Royal Institution Maths Masterclasses run by the University of Gloucestershire. These introduce the girls to ideas they wouldn¹t normally cover in their mathematics classes and so hopefully inspire them to continue their mathematics study further. Key Stage 4 students have opportunities to attend events aimed to inspire and encourage them to consider going on to study AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics as well as activity and problem solving days run by The Further Mathematics Support Programme. Advanced level students are given opportunities to attend revision courses, problem solving days and courses that will help them to prepare for the STEP and AEA examinations.
